16 Killed as Bus Ferrying Amarnath Yatris Falls Into Gorge in J&K’s Ramban, PM Modi Says ‘Extremely Pained’

Srinagar, July 16: The death toll in the Amarnath Yatra bus accident rose to 16 on Sunday, confirmed the Jammu and Kashmir police. The Amarnath Yatra pilgrims were killed on Sunday as a bus, bearing registration number JK02Y 0594, carrying them fell off the road into Nashrana Nallah on Jammu-Srinagar highway. 35 others are reported to be injured in the accident that happened near Nachilana area in Ramban district. The bus was part of the official Amarnath Yatra convoy.

According to latest reports, the rescue operation by the Army is underway. The J&K police was quoted by a media report as saying that 19 injured have being airlifted for treatment and eight persons have suffered minor injuries. The officials also informed that the accident occurred at 1.45 p.m.

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief on the incident. He posted, “Extremely pained by the loss of lives of Amarnath Yatris due to a bus accident in J&K. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. I pray that those injured in the bus accident in J&K recover soon.”
