3-wheelers seized for overcharging Noida commuters

The RTO officials along with a police team started inspecting shared autorickshaws at Sector 62 on Saturday. This action was done as per the complaints were coming  of autoricksawas drivers overcharging commuters .

“If we were to ask the driver about the rates he was charging, then he would never admit to any overcharging. Therefore, we stopped autorickshaws  which were carrying passengers and we asked the passengers about the rate they were going to pay. Many autorickshaw drivers were found charging the normal rates but a few were over-charging the commuters,” said AK Singh, assistant regional transport officer, Gautam Budh Nagar.

With Noida facing difficulties in last mile connectivity, shared autorickshaws prove to be business of easy money making  at important junctions such as NH24 intersection, Sector 62, Mamura, Sector 12, Sector 18, Nithari intersection and the City Centre Metro Station. These autorickshaws are used by thousands of working men and women employed in far off areas in Noida such as sectors 62, 63, 71 and other areas. The officials checked autorickshaws running in sectors 62, 63, 11, 12, 12/22, 15, City Centre and other important junctions in the city.

Explaining the over-charging, Singh said, “The autorickshaw fare route is decided by regional transport department and the drivers are bound to follow it. We have taken action against them by seizing their autos and issuing them notices.” The regional transport officials will further conduct inspections in the coming week to keep autorickshaw drivers in check.

Commuters welcomed the drive by the RTO officials.“It’s good that the officials are ensuring that the drivers do not over-charge us but they should also keep a check on the violation of traffic laws by these auto-rickshaw drivers. Many of them carry  excess passengers which make uncomfortable specially for female commuters.
