7th General Assembly of World Forum of Fisher People opens at New Delhi

The 7th General Assembly of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples opens in Delhi today. The Forum of Fisher Peoples will take place in Delhi from 15th to 21st November 2017. For the next seven days, the delegates from across the globe will discuss issues like Ocean and Land Grabbing, Food Sovereignty in the fishery context as well as the importance of women in fishing. The main focus will be on climate justice in the context of global warming, fossil fuel exploitation, fish depletion and livelihood threats to fishing communities throughout the world.

7th General Assembly of World Forum and Fisher peoples was inaugurated by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Naik in New Delhi.

 

Minister Radha Mohan Singh also released a book at the inaugural session.

According to the organisation, around 50 WFFP members are from the Global South and many of them represent Indigenous communities, who are traditional, small-scale, artisanal fishers. WFFP is also a member of the Planning Committee of the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty, and the Civil Society Mechanism (CSM) of the UN Committee on World Food Security.
