Acute crisis of IPS officers in J&K

About 60 percent posts of IPS officers are lying vacant in Jammu and Kashmir even as the police force is facing tough times in dealing with law and order situation in the State. The situation has come to such a state that several officers are holding multiple charges in the State. Observers said the shortage of IPS officers in JK is affecting the work of the police force in the State. Against the sanctioned strength of 147, 84 IPS officers are presently holding the State cadre. Out of these 84 officers, 24 are on central deputation. So, practically only 60 IPS officers are posted in the State. As per various reports, the JK Government did not send proposal to the Union Public Service Commission to fill the posts of IPS posts in the State cadre as there were several litigations against the seniority list of KPS officers who are be inducted into the IPS cadre. As many as 50 posts of IPS officers are stagnant for induction from KPS due to litigations.
