New Delhi: The Delhi government recently called for a special session of the Assembly to reassert its demand of granting full statehood to Delhi. The announcement comes at a time when the power tussle between the state government and the Lieutenant Governor has become more bitter after the recent acrimony over the installation of CCTV camera.
Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia earlier Tweeted,
“Delhi Assembly’s 3-days special session of on 6, 7 & 8 June to discuss and decide on the ‘demand of full statehood’ for Delhi. People of Delhi cannot be denied their rights. Looking forward to meaningful debates.”
On Tuesday, AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj Said that, The BJP had assured full statehood in its first Delhi-specific manifesto published in 2014, a promise which it has not fulfilled till now.
Addressing the media at Aam Aadmi Party Head Office, Bhardwaj Said,
“The BJP which demanded Delhi for the full statehood for the last 50 years, has been in the center for four years now but has not done anything in this Regard. In their manifesto, BJP had said to the delhi people to elect their MP, and they will give the people of Delhi the full statehood.
Today, the people of Delhi elected seven of the seven MPs to the BJP, but what happened to the “whole state” till now.”
“BJP demanded full statehood while they were in opposition, in the same way Congress has also been demanding. For 15 years, Sheila Dikshit, the Chief Minister of Delhi, wrote a book and told how Delhi was not given full statehood due to internal politics of Congress. We want all the agencies – departments in Delhi to be responsible to the people of Delhi, so that better work and development can be done,” added Bharadwaj.
