In a press release Brig K.G.Behl(Retd), President All India consumers council expressed shock and concern on behalf of the council over the death of about 30 children in the State run Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. As reported it is a clear case of negligence on behalf of the authorities whether it is shortage of oxygen where the pump was supplied to patients to generate oxygen  or sufficient care was not taken to diagnose disease which took toll of so many children. It is surprising that Rs 7 Lakhs were due for the supply of liquid oxygen and no wonder the supplier must have curtailed the supply if not totally stopped. It is even more horrifying that it happened within few days after the visit of the Chief Minister to whom every activity must have been shown as working fine.

Payment by Govt. to hospitals and their ancillaries  is not a new thing and many a times treatment has been stopped by private hospitals to CGHS/ ECHS etc. for non payment of expenses by the Govt. and every time the sufferers are the patients. It is reported that private hospitals who are empanelled  refuse to treat patients as their dues have not been paid by the Govt. inspite of repeated reminders. Why cannot the Govt. agencies make payments to the concerned dealers in time and unnecessarily create situations where lives are lost for no fault of the patients. It is high time that all departments involved are pulled up and data collected where payments are over due for a long time and action is taken against the culprits who indulge in such practices.

People should not be allowed to play with human lives and where ever the shortages or discrepancies are found suitable action should be taken rather than punishing innocent persons who are not at all involved in the issue. Of course those who due to lethargy or other slackness deaths have taken place be booked and punished.
