Lucknow, July 9: A Dalit professor in the Banaras Hindu University alleged caste-based discrimination by the Dean (Faculty of Arts) and lodged an FIR with the Police. The professor, in her complaint, alleged that the Head of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Kumar Pankaj passed casteist slurs on her. The whole controversy erupted when she went to Dean’s office for official purposes where she was inquired about her absence on a working day. Some media reports suggest that she has also made an appeal to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding strict action against the accused.

According to a report, the BHU professor further alleged that she was abused with casteist remarks when she declined about the absence and presented records of her presence at the university. Talking to local media persons, the victim alleged that her complaint was not addressed by Chief Proctor. She said Chief Proctor not only showed non-cooperation but also did not further her complaint. Thus, she had to approach the police in person. Upon her complaint, Senior Superintendent of Police directed the Lanka Police station to register the complaint. The police said the FIR was lodged under the relevant sections of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
