Everest laid the foundation, on which our modern Surveys rest
he measured the Geodetic Bases accurately, using compensation bar at best
he spread a network of triangles along Meridional Arc, like a birds nest
connected longitudinal series, fixing Kalianpur as origin in his spheroidal quest
Meridian numbering starts from Geenwich, the birth place of George Everest
His measuring of meridional Arc in India, was nothing but at inborn quest
His team work, dedication and devotion to work, generated unique interest
It was a fitting tribute to name after him, the highest Himalayan Crest
Everest came to India in 1806, on military assignment to Java
The survey spirit inside him, was smouldering within him as lava
Making navigational Bengal rivers, gave him first taste of survey saliva
Completing Chinar to Hyderabad route surveys, made him pass Lambton’s viva
Everest was nominated to surveys, and joined Lambton to Dec 1818 work
Triangulation of East of Hyderabad, gave him first survey exposure / jerk
He went on long medical leave, but reported back on La Calles as a young Turk
He fell sick quite often but worked hard, never going berserk
On Lambton’s death in 1923, he was appointed Superintendent of Trig. Surveys
He extended Great Arc Series from Berar to Sironj, in his style and ways
Health again troubled him and he took furlough and medical leave for days
But had to sail for UK in Nov. 1825 for treatment away from survey frays
Even in U.K. he kept surveys alive, by recapitulating his life in tents
Govt. deputed him to supervise, design and purchase new survey instruments
He visited Ireland, designed instruments, suiting Indian conditions and bents
His memoirs on conduct of surveys in India, brought him acclaim and cents
‘Lords’ is known for cricket, but Everest played here compensation bars game
He measured the ground many times and got, results every time the same
So ‘Lords’ remembers him, not as a cricketer, but a Geodetic star of fame
Who upheld the standards of accuracy making double country claim
Everest returned from England in 1830 not only fit but with definite aims
Brought along six pairs of compensation bars, to replace inaccurate chains frame
Great Theodolite, heliotropes, reverberatory lamps etc. made new accuracy claim
Measurement of great meridional Arc on ground, gave Everest, spheroid and name
Everest faced many difficulties in executing his meridional arc plan
He had to recruit, train and organize his staff, to move his survey van
In unknown and unseen lands he had to visualize and detail teams to scan
Erection of towers in flat terrain , brought visibility for longer span
Everest was so wedded to work that, he married after retirement from surveys
But once he got married in 1846, he took keen interest in family allays
he looked after his six children and wife, bringing new directions and rays
he joined professional bodies and church and wrote books on his survey days
Everest was a true genius and took completion of work as his wealth
And carried on his work with devotion, even at the stake of his health
He trained and completed his team, including a reserve for twelvth
For him work was true worship and for work he fought and knelth
