New Delhi: There was chaos at Delhi University Vice-Chancellor office on Monday, when students came out in large numbers against Professor Ramesh Chandra and demanded his resignation in alleged sexual harassment, molestation and misconduct with a teacher and PG students.

The post-graduate students and a female fellow professor of the Delhi University have leveled cases of sexual assault and misconduct against Ramesh Chandra who is currently the Head of the Department (HOD) of the Chemistry Department.

Later, students met with the college Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and VC and handed over their demands.

However, the internal complaints committee of Delhi University has already started hearing the deposition of witnesses in the two separate complaints of sexual harassment filed against Professor Ramesh by an ad-hoc teacher and a postgraduate student.

In her complaint, the teacher had complained of being humiliated by Chandra in front of six male faculty members during an interview for an ad-hoc position in the department on November 6, 2017, where she had been teaching for over six years.

Moreover, on March 28, students have written to the vice-chancellor demanding expulsion of Ramesh Chandra from the post of HOD.

ICC launched an investigation against Chandra, but students claimed despite ICC rules saying that a teacher could be suspended pending inquiry, Chandra was allowed to continue.

While protesting, students have alleged that several complaints have been lodged against Professor Chandra but due to his closeness with the university administration and no action has been taken so far.

Requesting anonymity, a student said, “Professor Chandra always talks with in girls in double meaning words and sometimes even eve-teases them.”

University students have also mailed to the University administration citing the rules of DU and UGC. “If any professor accused of two sexual harassment cases and investigation is underway, the professor can’t hold the post of HOD.  So, please take cognizance and remove him from the post,” the DU student added.
