The district Gautam Buddha Nagar was created on 6th Septemeber 1997 with effect from Govt. order no 1249/97/82/97 by carving out the portions of Ghaziabad and Bulandshahar.

As of present the district includes three assembly constituencies namely Noida, Dadri and Jewar. India’s first ISO 160001 certified city Greater Noida is also part of Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

The Law & Order structure of this 1,442 km2 district includes one Senior Superintendent of Police followed by SP(Rural Area), Addl SP (Traffic), Addl SP(Crime) and Addl SP (City).

While SP (Rural Area) and SP( City) have functional area divided between Greater Noida and Noida respectively, SP (traffic) is in-charge of whole districts traffic. Similarly SSP being the head of districts police structure also holds charge of whole district including “Noida” and “Greater Noida”.

Police departments fondness for brand “Noida”:

Noida or New Okhla Industrial Authority is the name of one of the urban region of Gautam Buddha Nagar district. Yet be it district police’s website or twitter handles, everything is branded on the name Noida.

Gautam Buddha Nagar police’s official website(which has the cover image of ‘Say No to Nonsense’, uses domain name www.noidapolice.com .Similarly district police’s official twitter handle is named as @noidapolice whereas traffic police uses @noidatrafficpol . The bio’s of these two accounts also stay wary of using name of Gautam Buddha Nagar district and describes itself as “official twitter account of Noida police”.

DGP directive for district police:

Former DGP Javed Ahmad had directed all 75 districts of the state to establish twitter handles and monitor complaints. In a subsequent circular, he asked SPs to create Twitter handles with the name of their district followed by “police”, adding that the SPs could also have individual accounts with their designation mentioned in the handle.

However going through all twitter handles of UP police only “Noida Police”, seems to be an exception that doesn’t follows this norm.

Similarly for website both gbnagarpolice.com and gautambuddhanagarpolice.com are conveniently available domain names in minimum possible price, yet district police somehow prefers to use noidapolice.com as its official web address. Gbnagarpolice username is also available on the twitter for free registration.

However this isn’t the only case of district police administrations confusing nomenclature preferences, there stands another glaring example of two thana’s having opposite names in Greater Noida.
