New Delhi : Despite the long-standing controversy over entry of women in the temple, a lot of people still know little about the temple and legends and traditions associated with it.

Kerala’s Sabrimala hit the news when it opened last month for the first time after the historic Supreme Court verdict allowing women between the age of 10 and 50 to pray there. Till the time temple remained open, a large number of followers prevented entry of women in that age group.

The situation as of now still very tense after the temple has opened again and there has been an alleged use of force by Kerala police on devotees.

Talking of history, the Sabarimala temple is connected to Lord Rama. According to a legend, the name Sabarimala is derived from Shabari, a tribal devotee of Lord Rama mentioned in the Ramayana. Sabarimala literally means the hill of Sabari.

Today, Surendra Kumar Jain, the international Joint General Secretary of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, at a press conference demanded Indian Prime Minister to take initiative to construct huge temple for Lord Rama on the grounds of his birthplace.

He today spoke about the affect of Supreme Court’s verdict regarding Sabrimala Case.

He said, “Sabrimala Temple have crore of visitors every year. And changing the rules of any religious place which is working in a certain way from past thousands of years is something that is not tolerable for any resident of India, whether Hindu or Muslim, Sikh or Christian, every Indian is aware of Sabrimala temple’s value.”
