New Delhi: The clamour for capital punishment to child rapists grew as public outcry over the gangrape and murder of an eight-year-old in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua and the gangrape of another minor in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao. Protests across India have demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits of Kathua and Unnao rape and murder.

On the other hand, Former PM Manmohan Singh said that Narendra Modi’s failure to speak up earlier had allowed people to think that they could get away without stern action being taken against them. “I do feel that those in authority must speak up in time (so as) to give a lead to their followers”.

On Wednesday, Addressing the Indian diaspora in London at a mega event titled “Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath,” PM Modi said, rape should not be politicised. “The rape of a girl child is a matter of worry, of shame for the nation. It is not a matter to politicise. It is time parents start asking their boys, not their girls, exactly where they go & what they do.”

“That’s why I presented this issue from the Red Fort in a new way. I had said that if a daughter comes late, parents ask where had she gone and why. Whom did she meet? Everyone asks their daughters, but you should also ask your sons where had they been,” Modi added.
