Le Meridien New Delhi goes dark to shine a light on climate action with Earth Hour 2017.The hotel will join millions around the world in turning off lights for one hour on March 25 at 8:30 p.m. local time to illuminate a powerful message about environmental awareness and action. The annual global environmental awareness event was created and instituted by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007 to emphasize the threat of climate change.

Le Meridien New Delhi’s dedication to environmental sustainability implemented other energy-saving measures during Earth Hour, March 25 at 8:30pm by turning off exterior signage lighting; dimming or turning off non-essential interior lighting; using candlelight in appropriate public areas such as restaurants and bars.

Guests of the hotel and others were encouraged to  support this great cause by lighting candles in the hotel’s tennis court to form  the well recognized Earth Hour logo ‘60+ EARTH HOUR’.

The hotel strictly follows energy saving guidelines and saves nearly 300 KW of electricity by turning off lights for an hour after the observance of  Earth Hour every year  and has the following energy saving and environment friendly mechanisms in place:

  • 80% lighting in the hotel is through CFL and cold LED lights.
  • AC plants are energy efficient as per environment ministry guidelines.
  • STP plant recycles waste water for flushing toilets and is used in the cooling tower.
  • A composter has been installed to recycle garbage from kitchen and restaurants and staff cafeteria. The garbage thus treated is used as high quality manure for horticulture purpose in the hotel.
  • Solar electrical system generates 259 KW of electricity per day.
  • Solar heating system preheats hot water for guests of the hotel by 3 to 4 degrees thereby saving electricity use.

By demonstrating these efforts on social media, Le Meridien New Delhi will be participating in Marriott International’s drive to raise funds for WWF, where US $1 will be donated for each Marriott property that tweets their Earth Hour activities.

“It’s a privilege for us to support such a powerful movement with such a simple gesture,” said Denise Naguib, Vice President of Sustainability and Supplier Diversity, “Earth Hour reflects a philosophy we try to practice year-round that we all must do our part and together we can make a big difference. Climate change affects everyone and it also has an impact on thecontinued success of our business.”
