Since February 2016 Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University has been in News for not so right reasons. Beginning from the alleged sloganeering of anti-India slogans, JNU has come under intense scrutiny and heat.
Not so long ago, the incumbent JNU VC also demanded for installation of Army Tanks at the university to encourage patriotic feelings in students.
However in an amazing turn of events a JNU alumnus, herself has now become the Defense Minister of India.
Nirmala Sitharaman will be India’s first full-time women Defense Minister. Since after Manohar Parikar left the central cabinet for re-installment s Goa CM, the post of Defense ministry was being handled by Arun Jaitely.
Now that finally India again has a full-time Minister at this strategically important portfolio, it will be interesting to see what reforms, if any are brought in this domain.

The Master of Economics Handel’s Defense

Aged 58, Nirmala Sitharaman is a Master of Economics from JNU. Her experience with commerce ministry can help the defense segment in nurturing more fruits of investments in this particular domain.
Another important issue that might require her urgent attention would be the creation of Chief of Defense post in India. At present President is considered as Chief of Defense forces but now considering changing paradigms, it is being increasingly demanded to create a separate post in this regard.
