New Delhi, September 09 : About 800000 people commit suicide worldwide every year, of these 135,000 (17%) are residents of India.

“Over 95% of those who attempt suicide battle Depression, Anxiety, Addiction or Psychological difficulties. Life events like rejection, loss, trauma, failure, death of a loved one or break up can be triggers that can push one over the edge,” says Dr Sunil Mittal, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at CIMBS Delhi Psychiatry Centre.

In India, about 46,000 suicides occurred each in 15–29 and 30–44 age groups in 2012 – or about 34% each of all suicides. On average, males suicide rate is twice that of females in India. People who attempt suicide feel psychological distress and a sense of helplessness.

“Very often we find that before taking any step towards suicidal behavour, people may show some suicidal gestures like cutting themselves, or making arrangements to collect things like ropes or poison to carry out a suicidal act, prepare a will, or even appear cheerful and meet a lot of friends or family members to say goodbye. These signs are red flag signs and should not be missed, as catching these signs can help in timely intervention. If someone you know is going through distress, it is important to keep a close watch and lend a caring hand to help in distress. It is important to be aware and spread awareness about suicide prevention. Dont hesitate to reach out to a Psychologist or Psychiatrist, you could save a life,” says Dr Sunil Mittal, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at CIMBS Delhi Psychiatry Centre.
