Noida: The Noida and Ghaziabad traffic departments will soon have so-called ‘traffic enforcement centres’. These special centres will deal with commuters through digital platforms and bolster the dispatch of e-challans and photo challans. So far, the digital tasks were being performed at the offices of the SPs and became a burden on the limitied infrastructure.

Anil Agarwal, ADG (Traffic), said the government has sanctioned funds for the setting up of the traffic enforcement centres, which in turn will aid in the implementation of the integrated traffic management system (ITMS) and smart city surveillance system (SCSS). “We are conducting a survey for integration and optimisation of traffic signals in Noida, Ghaziabad and 10 other cities.”

The new centres will focus on digitalisation of the traffic regulation. “The traffic police will reach out to commuters and citizens on digital platforms. We will provide them infrastructure to quickly send the photo challan and e-challan to the violators’ residences, which at present gets delayed due to lack of infrastructure,” Agarwal said. The enforcement centres will come up in the two cities within a month.

The survey for ITMS is under way in Noida while it has been completed in the other cities. Officials said the survey got delayed as traffic lights have been removed at many points where there construction of underpasses, elevated roads and Metro extension works. Sine the traffic is managed manually on these stretches, the officials have not been able to conduct a study on these stretches.
The ITMS will be completed in three phases. In the first phase, all isolated traffic signals will be equipped with CCTV cameras, whereby they will be able to change their signal cycle as per traffic volume. In the second phase, all these signals will be connected to the local control room in respective cities. The traffic department will optimise and synchronise all signals, creating a green corridor for smooth and hassle-free travel in the last phase which will be completed by this year. The CCTV cameras will also catch traffic rule breakers and the enforcement department will issue e-challans to them once the systems are in place. Agarwal said that the new Centres will expedite the traffic enforcement and regulation works in the two cities.
The UP traffic department, meanwhile, is developing a mobile application which will be a platform for useful information about traffic rules and regulations, and the fines. The users can also get to know the traffic pressure in the cities and stretches concerned and plan their journey accordingly.
