New Delhi: WeSpeakOut, the largest survivor-led movement to end Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) amongst Bohrasin collaboration with Nari Samta Manch, a trust for gender equality released a new report on FGM/C in India titled, ”The Clitoral Hood a Contested Hood a Contested Site: Khafd or Female Genital Mutilation/ Cutting (FGM/C) in India”.

The report has revealed startling statistics and unnerving trends regarding the practice of FGM/C in India.

On Monday, The report was released in New Delhi, in the Presence of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

The Report reveals several tragic stories, including that of an 8-yr-old girl who underwent FGM/C as recent at 2017, and was stitched up 12 hours after a botched up FGM/C procedure due to excessive bleeding. The report also warns of the risk of india becoming a hub for FGM/C of expat and foreign Bohragirls, owing to the global crackdown on FGM/C in the Bohra community through the legal cases in Australia and USA, and because India still does not have a law against FGM/C. The study also revealed an unsettling current trend increasing medicalization of FGM/C in India (performance of FGM/C in medical facilities by doctors).

Speaking on the Movement , Senior Congress Leader and Former Union Minister, Shashi Tharoor Said, “I’m happy to be a small part of this initiative. When you ask about Parliament the issue hasnt came up there yet . What’s particular vital is to raise public consciousness. There are people present today to testify. The fact and the big debate is about article 25 which gives right to practice anything.

“We witnessed section 377’s horrendous resistance in Parliament. There will be always political agenda to target some communities. The people who are attacking people for cows is ghastly and we should take care of these issues also. It’s not such a Parliamentry debate,  We should Build a climate so that people can support this.”

Founder Of WeSpeakOut, Masooma Ranalvi said, “The Ministry of Women and Child Development stated that there was no evidence of this despite hundreds of survivors coming forward to expose this practice. I think there is enough proof that it exists. The government cannot take such a stand. They have to first acquire data from the NCRB. They can do a study without revealing the identity of the survivors. There are a lot of people who are opposed to it and willing to talk about it. It is not impossible to get information”.
