Heat on Yadav Singh forced Mulayam’s House U-turn?
At a news conference on Thursday, finance minister Arun Jaitley looked irritated when a reporter asked him what she called the buzz in Congress circles that Mulayam Singh Yadav’s decision to disengage Samjawadi Party from Congress’ blockade of Parliament had to do with Yadav Singh’s legal troubles.
“What has Mulayam Singh Yadav got to do with an official,” snapped Jaitley. “Is Congress alleging this?” he asked.
CBI has questioned Yadav Singh for three days over his investments and properties and alleged links with politicians, bureaucrats, builders.
Sources said Singh was asked about his investments in properties, companies floated by him in the name of his wife and other family members and people whom he allegedly met at his secret ‘office’ in the basement of his house in Noida.
The documents, recovered by the agency, reveal Yadav Singh having amassed properties worth crores of rupees, much higher than his known sources of income, sources said. His son Sunny Yadav, wife Kusum Lata and daughter Garima Bhushan have also been questioned by agency in two cases registered earlier this month.
The agency is suspecting that Singh has strong political links in Uttar Pradesh who knew about his illegal activities in the Noida authority, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway.
“We are examining documents of at least 30 projects related to construction of flyovers, sewage pipelines, drainage, hospitals, parks, housing societies and metro, which were handled by Singh. These projects were approved by Singh when he was working in Noida authority, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway as chief engineer and he is alleged to have favoured several private persons,” said a CBI officer.
CBI has booked Singh and his family members for criminal conspiracy and under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act. During searches by Income Tax department in November, 2014, several documents and Income Tax returns were recovered from Singh’s premises. The scrutiny of documents have allegedly revealed that during the period 2009-2014, the total likely savings of the family of the then chief engineer was nearly Rs 1.70 crore whereas the family was in possession of immovable property worth Rs 3.60 crore. Besides, cash amounting to nearly Rs 10 crore was recovered from one of his associates, CBI has said.
Singh is being probed for allegations of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery and under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act for awarding contracts without following the laid down procedures and thereby causing undue financial gain to the tune of crores of rupees to private firms.
