New Delhi (05/05/2017): Supreme Court on Friday upheld death penalty to the four convicts of the Nirbhaya gang rape case.
The matter was presented at the apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra and comprising of Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan. The convicts – Akshay, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh, had challenged the Delhi High Court order which had sentenced them to the gallows. But, the apex court refused to provide relief to them.
“The hazardous and demonaical demeanor of the convicts, affected the conscience of humanity and they don’t deserve any relief ,” the Supreme Court said on Friday.
After hearing the verdict of Supreme Court, Badri Singh, father of Nirbhaya said that, today justice has been served and it proves strength of our laws and democracy.
On December 16, 2012, Nirbhaya, the 23-year-old paramedic, was raped and brutalised with an iron rod on a moving bus in Delhi. She and her male friend were then thrown out of the bus. Nirbhaya lost her battle for life in a Singapore hospital on December 29.
