New Delhi, July 29, 2023: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the early hours of Saturday. The seismic activity occurred approximately 126 km southeast (SE) of Port Blair and was reported at 12:53 am.
The National Centre for Seismology reported that the earthquake had a depth of 69 km and its epicenter was located at 10.75 latitude and 93.47 longitude. However, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), as cited by Reuters, recorded the quake’s depth at 10 km and measured its magnitude as 6.0 on the Richter scale.
Thankfully, no casualties or major damages have been reported as a result of the tremors. However, residents in the region experienced mild shaking and were left rattled by the sudden quake.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are situated in a seismically active region, making them prone to such natural phenomena. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and conducting assessments to ensure the safety and well-being of the island’s inhabitants.
Earthquakes are a natural occurrence caused by the shifting of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface. The Indian subcontinent lies on one of the most seismically active zones in the world, leading to occasional tremors in various parts of the country.
As the region continues to experience aftershocks, people are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols issued by the authorities. Emergency response teams are on standby to provide assistance if needed.
