5G launch by 2020, India to be hub of 5G technologies claims DoT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan

New Delhi: In a bid to create awareness of India’s capability to launch 5G technology based services at the same time as the rest of the world, if not ahead, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) the apex industry body representing the major telecom, lnternet, technology and digital services companies in the country hosted the India Meeting of international experts on ‘Catalyslng 5G in lndia’ today here.

A week after the plenary meetings in Chennai where the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (BGPP) executives met and made considerable progress towards finalising the standards for Non Stand Alone-New Radio (NSA-NR), which allows 5G deployments over existing 4G networks.

The event brought together international experts on 5G face to face with Government, mobile network operators and other industry stakeholders and gave them an informal platform to discuss and deliberate crucial issues regarding the new technology and its uses.

Speaking in the event, Secretary of the Department of Telecom, Aruna Sundararajan said, “ 5G is not only fastest way to communicate but also a new form of energy. Currently, the department is working on the blueprint of launching in India and we will have it by June 2018. Moreover, we are currently drafting the National Telecom Policy.”

She further said, “One thing I want to assure, that India is going to become the hub of 5G technologies. Government agencies, IITs and Industry in working together on and by 2020 we will enjoy flawless 5G network.”
COAL recently launched the 5G India Forum consisting of industry stakeholders. This forum will facilitate cooperation between government and industry in shaping the strategic, commercial, and regulatory development of the SG ecosystem in India.

While the DG, COAl, Rajan S Mathews said, “COAl’s 5G India Forum and (PB will continue to work together as the efforts to make 5G specifications for delivery of services across sectors including automobiles, agriculture, logistics, medicine and health gain momentum and the Telecom Service Providers come closer to providing services across sectors which is vital to enable them achieve Digital lndia.”
