70% of Indian doctors feel they have a right to strike; almost 100% demand protection against violence and harassment: eMediNexus Survey

New Delhi, June 30, 2016: eMediNexus, India’s largest doctor networking and advocacy platform recently conducted a survey across a sample size of 4,981 doctors to determine the key issues affecting the medical fraternity today. Close to 100% of all the doctors surveyed felt that the government must provide protection against the increasing cases of violence and harassment against them. They further demanded the formulation of a separate grievance cell for all cases of medical negligence and allocation of a special police unit in times when faced by a relevant threat.

Close to 70% of doctors surveyed felt that they as a professional class should have a right to go on strike.

About 60% felt that the PCPNDT Act was discriminatory against Radiologists and could harm the practice of other doctors.

The outcome of the skewed sex ratio in India, according to doctors is not only linked to the practice of Radiologists, with some doctors stating that in some cases ultrasound and sex determination may be required towards securing foetal wellbeing, while others claim it should be right of the mother to know the sex of the baby she carries. The most affected pool of other doctors was reported to be Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The survey was conducted on occasion of the upcoming Doctor’s Day on July 1st, a day celebrated in memory of Dr. BC Roy, a respected Indian healthcare leader and freedom fighter.
