New Delhi (India), May 7, 2023: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal raised concerns over the Election Commission of India’s notice to Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar, demanding evidence for corruption allegations against the BJP government in the state. Sibal questioned why the poll panel did not seek proof from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks on “backdoor political negotiations with those linked to terrorism.”

The EC had taken note of a complaint filed by the BJP and asked for substantiation of the claims made in a Congress advertisement titled “Corruption Rate Card,” which detailed alleged bribe amounts for appointments, transfers, and government deals.

Sibal took to Twitter, stating, “EC: Seeks proof from Congress for graft claims against BJP. What about seeking proof from the PM when he accused Congress of “backdoor political negotiations” with those linked to terrorism! Is it that EC dare not seek proof from PM?”

In response to Modi’s recent rally in Karnataka, where he accused Congress of protecting terrorism for the sake of the vote bank, the Karnataka Congress filed a police complaint against the prime minister. They sought action under relevant sections of the Representation of People Act, the Indian Penal Code, and other legal provisions.

During the rally, Modi criticized the Congress for opposing a film based on terrorism and alleged that the party had engaged in “backdoor political bargaining” with individuals associated with terror groups.

The Congress party questioned the Election Commission’s apparent double standards in demanding proof of corruption allegations against the BJP while not pursuing evidence for Prime Minister Modi’s terrorism-related comments. The political landscape in Karnataka continues to intensify as the state gears up for the upcoming assembly election on May 10.
