Srinagar, 19th June 2023: Today marks the conclusion of Jammu and Kashmir’s fifth year of centralised Rule, making it the second-longest stretch of presidential Rule since Independence. In India, states have been subjected to central Rule 125 times. Since 1977, Jammu and Kashmir have been directly ruled by the Central Government eight times. Additionally, it was the location where Central authority lasted the longest—more than six years.
2014 saw the last assembly elections, which resulted in a splintered mandate.

After settling on a minimally shared agenda, Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party and the BJP established an alliance. However, the coalition disintegrated on June 19, 2018, as the BJP decided to stop supporting the PDP-led alliance.

Because Kashmir has endured the most for the right to vote, many people in Jammu and Kashmir eagerly await the opportunity to cast their ballots. Since 1990, thousands of individuals have perished at the hands of terrorists simply because they stood up for democracy and the right to cast a vote.

Terrorists never desired a democratic government and attacked mainstream political workers when they overran Jammu and Kashmir in the 1990s.

Governor’s Rule was enacted in January 1990 due to Farooq Abdullah’s resignation as chief minister. It went on for over six years. The main regional party, National Conference, was regarded as a representation of Indian democracy in Kashmir.
