Gujarat, Sept 24th, 2022: In the wake of intense protests by cattle-rearers, the Gujarat Legislative Assembly unanimously withdrew a bill aimed at prohibiting the movement of stray cattle on roads and public places in urban areas of the state, months after it was passed.
The bill had proposed to license, regulate and prohibit cattle movements in the urban areas, and it was passed on the last day of the budget session in March after a marathon discussion for six hours in which Congress had strongly opposed it.
The bill was passed in light of several incidents wherein road accidents were caused to the unregulated movement of cattle on the roads.
It aimed at cattle-rearers obtaining a license for the cows, buffaloes, etc they own failing which they might face legal action.
Protests were held by cattle-rearers at the mahapanchayat in Gandhinagar on 18th September and in other different parts of the state.
A day later, Governor Acharya Devvrat sent back the Bill to the state government for reconsideration in view of the large-scale opposition.
The proposal to withdraw the bill was tabled for a vote by Minister of State for Urban Development Vinod Moradiya and was subsequently withdrawn by unanimous vote earlier this week.
