New Delhi, 8 November 2022: Ahead of the Delhi MCD elections next month, the Delhi BJP has overturned the three-year-old expulsion of two party leaders, including a former mayor.
Azad Singh, the president of Mehrauli district, and Sarita Chaudhary, a former mayor of South Delhi, were expelled from the BJP in 2019 for insubordination. The move was taken against them as a result of a public altercation between the estranged husband and wife at the Delhi BJP office.
After a rumoured video of Singh slapping Chaudhary at the party office surfaced, he was fired as the district president. A few weeks later, Chaudhary was also relieved of his duties as Delhi’s “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign leader. After discovering a supposed recording of Chaudhary slapping Singh, the party leadership also decided to take action against her.
Delhi BJP President, Adesh Gupta wrote separate letters to Chaudhary and Singh informing them that their expulsion from the party had been reversed with immediate effect due to their “dedication” to the cause.
According to party insiders, the suspension was lifted since both leaders are influential in various South Delhi neighborhoods and the party wants to employ them in the MCD elections on December 4.
