Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, August 7, 2023: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) embarked on its fourth day of a meticulous scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi on Monday. The survey aims to ascertain whether the mosque was constructed over a pre-existing temple. Hindu side’s lawyer, Vishnu Shankar Jain, emphasized that the ongoing survey is a rigorous scientific study and cautioned against expecting sensational daily revelations.

Jain stated, “The survey will continue till 5 pm. It is a scientific survey, different from an Advocates Commission survey. It is wrong to think that every day something new will be discovered since a detailed scientific study of structure and architecture is taking place.”

The ASI’s comprehensive report is anticipated to provide conclusive insights upon completion of the survey. The examination encompasses the entire campus, excluding sealed areas.

One of the Hindu plaintiffs in the case, Manju Vyas, expressed contentment with the ongoing court-sanctioned survey and lauded the ASI team for their diligent efforts.

However, concerns have arisen from the Muslim side over potential misinformation and rumors surrounding the survey. Syed Mohammad Yasin of Anjuman Intezamia Masjid, which oversees the Gyanvapi mosque, warned of a boycott if unfounded claims of discovering Hindu religious symbols and artifacts are circulated.

The Supreme Court, while declining to halt the Allahabad High Court’s order on the ASI survey, emphasized that invasive actions must be avoided during the process. The initiative has sparked debates regarding its potential impact on historical narratives and communal sensitivities.

As the survey continues to unravel the complex history of the Gyanvapi mosque, observers await the ASI’s final report to shed light on the dispute’s intricate dimensions.
