Babus to be punished if SP loses votes: UP CM Akhilesh Yadav

CKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday warned IAS officers “to perform or perish” ahead of the assembly elections next year.

Yadav claimed he was going to retain power after 2017 polls and added officers concerned would face consequence if his party’s votes declined in a particular area.

He called on the officers to work harder to fulfil his government’s top priorities of development and maintaining law and order in his address on the second day of the Services Week here.

The CM said he would be unsparing in case of poor law and order. “If any untoward incident takes place, it would be seen as the failure of the officers in that region and punishment would follow.”

Yadav claimed he has given full freedom and a conducive atmosphere to officers unlike the previous Mayawati government in the state and the Narendra Modi administration at the Centre.

“So, they should work with determination in delivering desired results,” he added.

The chief minister said that it was nice to celebrate the Services Week in which officers from all over the state meet each other.
“It has been a healthy tradition since long, but the officers were not allowed to celebrate it during the previous regime. But I have resumed it and for the past four year the IAS Week is being organised in Lucknow. This is an indicator of the freedom enjoyed by officers.” He regretted some officers were not working as they should have to pursue the development agenda. “Such is the situation that when an officer is punished for his non-performance, people celebrate. Why have things come to such a pass?” he asked.

“This is an election year. Soon, you would get busy in preparations and I would devote time for political mobilisation. So, there is little time left for fulfilling the government’s development works.”

Yadav reminded the officers his government has dedicated 2016 for welfare of farmers and youth. “You should ensure seeds, irrigation, fertilisers, power and crop insurance to farmers. It is possible only when you visit the field, meet farmers and redress their grievances.”
