Bangladesh in Turmoil: Foreign-Backed Dictatorship Threatens Democracy, Impacts India Ties – Indranil Banerjie

New Delhi, 03 June, 2025: In an exclusive conversation with Ten News Network, renowned geopolitical analyst and international affairs expert Indranil Banerjie voiced serious concerns over the current political crisis unfolding in Bangladesh and its implications for India.

According to Banerjie, the recent change in Bangladesh’s leadership marks a dangerous turn for the country’s democracy. “It’s tragic that Bangladesh has landed with a rotten leader—someone who was brought in from Paris, with no real political base, and is now acting like a dictator,” he said, referring to Mohammed Yunus, who he alleged is working as a foreign agent with Islamist affiliations.

He warned that this leadership is pushing Bangladesh toward instability and destruction. “This regime is not only harming Bangladesh internally but could also strain its historically strong ties with India,” Banerjie added.

Highlighting India’s significant trade and cultural ties with Bangladesh, he emphasized that while India might face limited immediate fallout, the real damage will be within Bangladesh itself. “India has always stood by Bangladesh—right from its independence—but today, sections of the Bangladeshi establishment are openly speaking against India. This is nothing short of thanklessness.”

Banerjie pointed out a deep divide within Bangladesh—between pro-India secular forces and radical Islamist elements who are often pro-Pakistan and hostile to minorities. “These anti-India forces are now emboldened by Yunus, who is an Islamist and a dangerous figure,” he stated.

On the question of elections, Banerjie believes the situation is tense. “The BNP, led by Khaleda Zia, is pressing for early elections, but Yunus wants to hold on to power. A major clash is inevitable between political parties and the Yunus-led government, which is backed by extremist groups like Jamaat-e-Islami,” he cautioned.

Despite current setbacks, Banerjie doesn’t believe Sheikh Hasina’s political journey is over. “She survived an assassination attempt and continues to have support. This is not a natural political transition—it’s a foreign-engineered coup, reportedly with backing from Western powers displeased with Hasina’s independent policies,” he noted.

Calling for greater Indian support to pro-democracy and secular forces in Bangladesh, Banerjie concluded, “If Mohammed Yunus goes back to Paris, Bangladesh may still have a chance. Until then, the region remains on edge.”
