Kolkata, 12th June 2023: The members of Trinamool Congress and BJP are fighting over alleged disrespect for the Thakurbari Temple, a revered shrine of electorally vital Matua community.
The incident alleged by the TMC officials alleged that the security personnel, attached to BJP leader and Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, entered the premises with their shoes on and manhandled women. The leaders emphasised that they have disrespected the institution with Senior TMC leader and National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee called it a “shameful display of power” that desecrated the sanctity of Thakurbari in the name of politics.
TMC leaders took to social media sites to share pictures and of the alleged ruckus at the temple.
Union Minister of State for Ports and Shipping and BJP MP Shantanu Thakur retaliated by saying that the religious freedom in the state has been put on edge and that the Matua Community is being cowardly targeted. The Matua Community & its devotees know how much the failed Chief Minister and the other party members ‘respect’ the community.
He also accused the CM of consistently disappointing the Matuas and added that today’s incident shows her ‘real side.’
