New Delhi, 13th June 2023: The private forecasting agency, Skymet Weather, has predicted a bleak monsoon across India this year. The agency added that the ongoing cyclone Biparjoy, is impending the advancement of the rain system in the Indian Peninsular.

The agency also expressed its concerns for the agriculture sector this year. The company’s ‘Extended Range Prediction System’ (ERPS) predicts a bleak forecast for the next four weeks, until July 6. The agricultural heartland appears fractured and desiccated. ‘This coincides with the critical time of sowing or, at the very least, preparing the field in anticipation of impending rains,’ company officials said.

This comes as the southwest monsoon reached Kerala on June 8, a week after the usual date of June 1. While monsoon rains typically cover Maharashtra, Odisha, and half of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar by June 15, the monsoon stream has yet to settle over these areas. The observable manifestation of monsoon surge is currently limited to the northeast and west coast. Unfortunately, no signals of meteorological systems developing over the Bay of Bengal in the near future, which are critical drivers of the monsoon, are seen.
