New Delhi, 12th June 2023: The last Indian journalist on Chinese soil has been asked to leave as the countries continue to eject each other’s reporters in a tit-for-tat row. The official Chinese government authorities have reporedly instructed the Press Trust of India reporter to leave the country this month.
The move further deepens the ongoing rift between the two countries. The move also means that India’s media presence is now wiped out.
Earlier this year, four Indian media groups had four reporters based in China. The Hindustan Times journalist left over the weekend, while two journalists from Prasar Bharati and The Hindu were rejected visa renewals in China in April.
Last month, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that one Chinese journalist remained in India and was awaiting visa renewal. Previously, New Delhi denied visa renewal requests from two journalists from the Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television.
The Indian government stated earlier this month that Chinese journalists were functioning freely in the nation, but this was not the case for Indian journalists in China. Both countries were in contact about the matter, it was added.
