Cyclone Biparjoy update: Around 74,000 people rescued

Ahmedabad, 15th June 2023: With cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ expected to make landfall near Jakhau Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district on Thursday, officials said the state administration had shifted more than 74,000 people living near the coast as a precaution and deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief measures.

Cyclone Biparjoy is only about 200 km from the Gujarat shore. The administration has relocated residents from roughly 120 villages in the Kutch area, between zero and ten kilometres from the seashore.

Cyclone Biparjoy is predicted to land in Gujarat on Thursday, causing rough seas at the Gateway of India. Meanwhile, high tide is forecast at 10:29 a.m. in Mumbai, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.

The Indian Navy is on standby for Cyclone Biparjoy. Assisted with Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) bricks were embarked on four ships, as were five relief teams each at Porbandar and Okha and 15 assistance teams at Valsura.

Helicopters are also ready to deploy at INS Hansa in Goa and INS Shikra in Mumbai, and P8i and Dornier aircraft from INS Hansa are on standby for aerial surveillance and transfer of relief material and troops. Additional HADR supplies and equipment are also on standby.
