New Delhi, July 27, 2023: As the monsoon continues to shower its blessings upon the national capital, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, indicating the likelihood of moderate rain on Thursday.
The city witnessed intermittent showers in the past 24 hours, bringing respite from scorching temperatures but also causing waterlogging and traffic snarls in some areas.
The Met department forecasts intermittent rain for the next five to six days, with a gradual reduction in intensity over time. On Wednesday, parts of Delhi experienced moderate to heavy rainfall, leading to a drop in temperatures.
The maximum temperature settled at 31.3 degrees Celsius, a departure of four degrees from the normal, while the minimum temperature dropped to 23.8 degrees Celsius, three notches below the average.
This comes as a relief for Delhiites, who have been grappling with above-normal temperatures, soaring as high as 38 degrees Celsius, along with high humidity, in recent days.
Delhi has already witnessed above-average rainfall in the past four months, recording 53.2 mm in March, 20.1 mm in April, 111 mm in May, and 101.7 mm in June, surpassing the normal figures for the corresponding months. On July 8 and 9, the city received a record-breaking 153 mm of rainfall in a single day, owing to the convergence of a western disturbance, monsoonal winds, and cyclonic circulation over northwest India.
Meanwhile, the Yamuna River in Delhi has crossed the danger mark of 205.33 meters due to heavy rains in the capital and upper catchment areas. The water level at the Old Railway Bridge reached 205.5 meters on Wednesday evening. The flow rate at the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana fluctuated between 30,000 cusecs and 50,000 cusecs on the same day.
