New Delhi (India), April 22, 2023: The former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Satyapal Malik, has been summoned by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a witness in an alleged insurance scam during his tenure.
The CBI is investigating corruption allegations made by Malik in the awarding of contracts for a group medical insurance scheme for government employees and civil work worth ₹2,200 crore related to the Kiru hydroelectric power project in Jammu and Kashmir.
The agency has booked Reliance General Insurance and Trinity Re-Insurance Brokers Limited in the case.
In response to the summons, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, tweeted his support for Malik, commending his courage in these “times of fear.”
Kejriwal stated, “Whenever there was a crisis in this great country, people like you faced it with courage…You go ahead, sir. Proud of you.”
Malik clarified that the agency had summoned him as they needed “information” and “clarifications” regarding a scheme he had raised, in which money was involved. Malik added that he was not afraid of anyone and had given the CBI dates from April 27 to 29 when he was available.
Last week, Malik claimed in an interview that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked him not to speak of alleged lapses on the part of the Ministry of Home Affairs following the Pulwama terror attack in 2019.
Malik did not provide any material evidence to prove his allegations. Although the summons was not linked to his allegations, Malik believes that the Central Government is harassing people. “I am not afraid of anybody or anyone,” he asserted. The entire country is now watching as the CBI’s investigation into the alleged insurance scam proceeds.
