New Delhi, December 18, 2024: A pivotal roundtable discussion, held at The Park Hotel, New Delhi, placed a spotlight on the critical role of private players in reshaping India’s higher education landscape. Organized by the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI), the event also celebrated educational entrepreneurs who have risen to key political positions as Members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies.

The highlight of the event was an inspiring address by Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Rajya Sabha MP and Chancellor of Lovely Professional University, who passionately called for transformative reforms to achieve the ambitious Vision 2047. With over 50,000 institutions and more than 1,200 universities, Dr. Mittal emphasized that while India has the numbers, delivering global-quality education remains a daunting challenge.

Key Issues Hindering Progress

Dr. Mittal candidly criticized the inefficiencies plaguing India’s education sector. He highlighted cumbersome regulatory processes that delay critical approvals for universities, taking over six months for even basic nomenclature clearances. “These bottlenecks stifle innovation and progress, preventing our institutions from reaching their full potential,” he stated.

Drawing a parallel with professional sectors like chartered accountancy, architecture, and medicine, Dr. Mittal pointed out the stark contrast in how their associations wield influence. “Educational institutions, despite being pillars of nation-building, often find their voices ignored. This has to change,” he urged.

The Way Forward

Dr. Mittal championed the need for collective action among educators, institutions, and policymakers. “If we unite as a sector, we can overcome these challenges and ensure that our infrastructure and talent are not wasted. The focus must shift from merely producing degrees to fostering competence that meets global industry standards,” he emphasized.

He also called on institutions to strengthen organizations like EPSI, advocating for a stronger collective voice to drive regulatory and policy reforms.

Vision for a Developed India by 2047

Expressing hope for the future, Dr. Mittal aligned his vision with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream of a developed India. “We can redefine India’s education system and emerge as a global education hub. The world will look to us for innovation and leadership if we stay committed to this shared goal,” he affirmed.

The event concluded with a resounding pledge from participants to elevate Indian education to global benchmarks, blending excellence with cultural heritage.

This landmark gathering marked a significant step towards transforming India’s higher education ecosystem, paving the way for a brighter and more competent future.
