National, Nov 8, 2022: During his first visit to Russia since the war in Ukraine began, EAM S. Jaishankar will meet with Russian Deputy PM Denis Manturov and Foreign Minister Sergei Largov in Moscow.
Addressing S. Jaishankar’s visit, Russian foreign ministry said: “The talks [between EAM Jaishankar and his counterparts] will focus on the trade and investments, transport and logistics, the use of national currencies in mutual settlements, as well as promising projects in the energy sector, especially in the Arctic shelf and the Russian Far East.”
As per reports, Russia is now India’s largest supplier of oil surpassing Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
Furthermore, Indian and Russian Central banks have also been in talks in the past few months about developing the Rupee-Rouble payment mechanism which will help in circumnavigating the U.S. and European Union sanctions on Russia over the war.
Dr. Jaishankar is also expected to discuss regional issues and raise concerns over the continuing war during talks with Mr. Lavrov.
A number of U.S. based reports have fueled the conversation surrounding India’s possible role as a mediator in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
