New Delhi, 03rd July 2023: The Election Commission established an internet platform for registered political parties to file their financial records, including donor reports and poll spending accounts. The move promotes transparency in political organisation disclosures and facilitates the election process.
Insiders say the action is part of the poll panel’s “3C strategy” of cleaning up, cracking down, and complying to promote transparency and accountability in political money and expenditure, which it has been working on for a year under Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.
Political parties that do not intend to post their financial reports online must explain why in writing and may continue to file reports in hard copy format along with CDs or pen drives in the approved formats.
The official statement stated that the availability of online data would improve compliance and openness. The Commission also indicated that it would post all reports and the party’s letter of justification for not publishing financial information online.
The Commission stated in a letter to political parties that the action was done with two goals: to overcome problems in completing physical reports and to ensure timely filing in a standardised format. Political parties can file Contribution Reports, Audited Annual Accounts, and Election Expenditure Statements online using the platform.
