The youth of country has been doing marvels in their respective fields in the recent years. The students of engineering have accomplished path breaking innovations to invent new products. These young students have been attempting to replicate costly products by innovative restructuring of the same and finding low cost solutions to the same. In this series, the students of Mechanical Engineering department of YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad have designed and developed an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV). The vehicle has specially been designed to participate in Mega ATV Championship 2016 to be held from March 4 to 7, 2016 at Bhubaneswar (Odisha).
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dinesh Kumar today unveiled the All-Terrain vehicle and successful field testing was done by the Team MechNext Racing (TMR), comprising 30 students from the University.
The Vice Chancellor said that getting involved with such kind of projects is a great way to learn the real engineering skills. To design and actually build such vehicle is an experience which students cannot get in a classroom. The vehicle is a unique innovation by the students. It is very light, compact, agile, with better handling facilities, he added.
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Vasdev Malhotra, who guided the students in the project, said that the team is very hopeful for the event. They have completed the testing of vehicle locally and now they are gearing up for the event. About 100 teams from reputed Universities and Engineering Institutions from across the country will be participating in the event and it would be a tough competition, he added.
He said that the ATV, which is designed and developed by the students, is powered by a briggs and stratton 10 HP OHV engine and a customized alfa gearbox. With the total drive weight under 250 kg, the vehicle gives a very high power to weight ratio and vehicle’s advantage is its design and fabrication of 4 wheel drive system which allows the driver to toggle between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive according to situation. The vehicle is capable of climbing the stairs at an inclination of 45 degrees and also jumps from a height of 5 feet without any failure. The vehicle can be used in rescue missions and disaster management, he added. He further added that the team put around three month efforts to design the vehicle and it cost over Rs 2.35 lakh to build. B. Tech Final year student Kammran Shaikh, one of the students who designed the vehicle, said that "the competition is very challenging. We hope the event helps us learn essential engineering skills to solve practical problems”.
It is pertinent to mention here that Mega ATV Championship is a National Level student based ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) designing, manufacturing and racing event which is being organized by Autosports India, in association with Kalinga Motorsports Club, supported by Ministry of Sports, Govt. of Odisha, FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) and FMSCI (Federation of Motorsports Club of India). The aim of Mega ATV Championship is to promote good engineering practices in manufacturing of off-road and ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) for students by providing a platform where they can learn to design, manufacture and understand the utility of such vehicles. Apart from sporting, the event aims to educate the people and spread awareness regarding the wide application of such versatile vehicles for Disaster Management and accessing rough terrains.
