New Delhi News (20/09/2025): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) 75th Birthday (75th Birthday) was marked with the launch of a significant book, ‘A Journey of Inclusive Growth’, at the 103rd Skoch Summit (Skoch Summit). The book, authored by Prof. Mahendra Dev, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the PM, and presented by Sameer Kochar, provides a comprehensive account of Modi’s development journey—starting as Chief Minister (Chief Minister) and continuing as Prime Minister (Prime Minister). The event was attended by policymakers, bureaucrats, economists, and scholars who reflected on the themes of inclusive development and governance.

Dr. M. Ramachandran, former Secretary to the Government of India, delivered a keynote address on the occasion. He described the book as a unique documentation of development history, capturing for the first time the complete arc of a leader’s transformation from leading a state to leading the nation. “This book tells us how Narendra Modi, as Chief Minister, designed programs that directly benefitted ordinary people in education (Education) and health (Health). When he became Prime Minister, he continued the same approach on a larger scale,” he remarked.

Highlighting his personal experiences in government, Dr. Ramachandran said, “From toilets to transparency, Modi’s vision changed lives.” He elaborated on the Swachh Bharat Mission (Swachh Bharat Mission), calling it one of the most impactful initiatives for women. Before this program, women in villages often had to leave their homes before sunrise to relieve themselves in the open. With toilets being constructed across villages and cities, dignity, safety, and health were restored to millions of women. He added that the initiative successfully brought cleanliness (Cleanliness) into the national discourse as a matter of collective discipline.

He also praised the Ujjwala Yojana (Ujjwala Yojana), recalling how in parts of northern India, women and young girls collected wood and cow dung to light traditional chulhas, which exposed them to severe health hazards. “By ensuring gas stoves and LPG cylinders reached households, Modi’s government freed women from this unhealthy practice and improved their quality of life,” he observed.

Further, he pointed to the Jan Dhan Yojana (Jan Dhan Yojana) as a transformative reform. Earlier, millions of people avoided banks and operated outside the financial system. Under Modi’s leadership, accounts were opened for the underprivileged, which combined with Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) eliminated middlemen and corruption, ensuring government benefits reached the intended beneficiaries directly. “Transparency (Transparency) became the hallmark of governance,” he noted.

Dr. Ramachandran also raised an important concern about local governance. He pointed out that local bodies (Local Bodies) are responsible for 18 major functions, from drainage (Drainage) to waste management, yet lack adequate financial powers and resources. Citing his experience with the Ministry of Urban Development, he said that despite ambitious plans, local governments struggle to implement solutions effectively. “We need to empower local bodies. They should be given the resources and authority to execute solutions. Only then can ordinary citizens live comfortable lives instead of struggling with basic problems,” he urged.

Referring to Mumbai’s drainage system, he underlined the importance of creating master plans that are fully implemented rather than left incomplete. “Strong local governance reforms are needed. Empowering municipalities and local governments will improve governance, ensure delivery of basic services, and ultimately build a more developed India (Developed India),” he stressed.

The book ‘A Journey of Inclusive Growth’ not only highlights flagship programs such as Swachh Bharat, Ujjwala, and Jan Dhan, but also situates them within a broader framework of inclusive development. It reflects on how policy initiatives, when combined with strong political will, can transform everyday lives. As Dr. Ramachandran summed up, the book is both a record of India’s transformation and a guide to strengthening governance structures for the future.
