GREATER NOIDA News (04/12/2025): The College of Nursing at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, organized an Expert Talk on the theme “Universal Precautions in Clinical Settings to Prevent Transmission of Hepatitis B.” The session was held at Patanjali Hall, Ground Floor of GIMS Hospital, as part of Hepatitis Awareness Day observance. The event was coordinated by the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing in collaboration with the Department of Medicine, GIMS Hospital.

The programme was conducted under the leadership of Principal Prof. Dr. Neetu Bhadouria, and received consistent support from Dr. Brig. Rakesh Gupta, Director, GIMS; Dr. Rambha Pathak, Dean Academics; and Dr. Payal Jain, Head, Department of Medicine, who encouraged and appreciated the initiative.

Introducing the theme, faculty members emphasized that hepatitis—an inflammation of the liver—remains a major global health concern. Viral Hepatitis A–E continues to pose significant risks, with Hepatitis B and C being the most dangerous for healthcare professionals due to their transmission through infected blood and body fluids. Vaccination, safe injection practices, and strict adherence to universal precautions were highlighted as key measures to curb disease spread.

The Expert Talk was delivered by Dr. Hardeep Jogi, MD, Assistant Professor & Consultant Incharge, Medical ICU, GIMS. His presentation covered a wide spectrum of essential clinical and preventive aspects. Overview of Hepatitis Viruses: Detailed explanation of Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E; modes of transmission; and the global burden of disease.

Clinical Impact: Long-term outcomes of Hepatitis B and C, including chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Occupational Hazards: Exposure risks faced by healthcare workers due to sharp injuries, invasive procedures, and improper handling of biomedical waste.

Universal Precautions:

•Use of protective gear—gloves, masks, gowns, and eye shields

•Safe needle and sharp disposal practices

•Emphasis on hand hygiene as the most powerful tool in infection prevention

•Avoiding needle recapping and ensuring the use of puncture-proof containers

•Vaccination and PEP: Hepatitis B vaccination schedule for healthcare personnel and protocols for post-exposure prophylaxis.

•Biomedical Waste Management: Importance of segregating and disposing of infectious waste according to national guidelines.

•Safe Clinical Practices: Maintaining asepsis, sterilizing equipment appropriately, preventing cross-infections, and ensuring patient safety.

Real ICU Case Examples: Dr. Jogi shared practical clinical cases demonstrating how adherence to universal precautions successfully prevented potential transmission incidents. His interactive explanations, real-life case illustrations, and strong emphasis on safety protocols significantly deepened students’ understanding of infection prevention.

The session saw enthusiastic participation from M.Sc. Nursing First-Year students, B.Sc. Nursing Semester I students, and Internship trainees. Students engaged actively in discussions and expressed that the session enhanced their awareness and practical knowledge of safe clinical practices.

The Expert Talk proved to be highly informative and impactful, strengthening the knowledge base of nursing students on Hepatitis prevention and universal precautions. The continued encouragement from senior leadership—including Dr. Brig. Rakesh Gupta, Dr. Rambha Pathak, and Dr. Payal Jain—further enriched the programme. The event concluded on a positive note, following which students resumed their clinical duties with renewed awareness and improved safety preparedness.
