GREATER NOIDA News (14/12/2025): The Department of Microbiology at the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), through its CDST TB Laboratory, successfully organised a Hands-on Workshop cum Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on MGIT Liquid Culture on December 9, 2025. The event aimed at enhancing laboratory capacity and technical expertise in advanced tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics in line with national public health priorities.
The programme was formally inaugurated by Dr. (Brig.) Rakesh Gupta, Director, GIMS, at Patanjali Hall. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Gupta underscored the vital role of rapid and accurate TB diagnostic techniques in achieving the goals of the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP). He highlighted the need for advanced laboratory infrastructure, strict adherence to biosafety protocols, and well-trained manpower to improve patient outcomes and strengthen TB control efforts across the country.
The CME featured expert lectures along with intensive hands-on training sessions, focusing on the clinical and diagnostic significance of MGIT liquid culture in early detection of tuberculosis and drug susceptibility testing. Participants were trained in real-time laboratory practices, with practical sessions conducted in the Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) laboratory of the CDST TB Lab, ensuring compliance with the highest biosafety standards.
The academic programme was further enriched by the presence of distinguished external experts, including Dr. Avijit Awasthi, Microbiologist at IRL STDC, Agra, and Dr. Rajneesh Tripathi, Laboratory Specialist, IHAT Technical Support Unit, NTEP, State TB Cell, Lucknow. Both experts shared their extensive field and laboratory experience, providing valuable insights into operational challenges and best practices in TB diagnostics.

The workshop attracted participants from various medical colleges and hospitals, who benefited from direct exposure to the MGIT system. Under expert supervision, attendees actively performed hands-on MGIT liquid culture procedures, including processing and handling of tuberculosis samples, which significantly enhanced their practical understanding and technical confidence.
The event was conducted under the leadership of Dr. A. K. Sahni, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, GIMS. The smooth execution of the programme was ensured by the dedicated organising team comprising Dr. Sneha Mohan, In-charge, CDST TB Laboratory, along with Dr. Kushal Singh and Dr. Jagriti Bansal.
Participants widely appreciated the practical orientation, interactive discussions, and structured training approach of the CME. The workshop was described as a meaningful initiative towards capacity building, skill enhancement, and strengthening laboratory services, ultimately contributing to improved quality of care for tuberculosis patients.
