New Delhi (India), 4th May 2023: Google has made a significant step towards a password-free future by introducing ‘passkeys,’ a new and secure method of signing in to apps and websites.

The latest service from the company, which is available on all major platforms, claims to simplify the user experience by allowing them to log in using biometric identifiers such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or screen lock PINs.

Passkeys will be accessible as an option for Google Account users who want to explore a password-less sign-in experience beginning on May 4th.

Passkeys, according to Google, will replace traditional, inconvenient passwords, which are not only difficult to remember but can also put users at risk if they fall into the wrong hands.

The company said, “Passkeys are both easier to use and more secure than passwords, so users no longer need to rely on the names of pets, birthdays, or the infamous ‘password123’.”

Google has been developing passkeys in collaboration with the FIDO Alliance, Apple, and Microsoft as a simpler and safer alternative to passwords. Several services, including Docusign, Kayak, PayPal, Shopify, Yahoo! and Japan, have already implemented passkey experiences to simplify user sign-in.

Users can try out the new passkey feature by going to g.co/passkeys. Passkeys are simple to set up, and administrators of Google Workspace accounts will soon be able to enable passkeys for their end-users upon sign-in.

While passwords and two-step verification (2SV) will continue to work for Google Accounts, passkeys will be an additional sign-in option. The company intends to abolish passwords entirely in the future.

Therefore with the introduction of Passkeys it would be interesting to see whether it would be a step towards abolishing the use of passwords from our lives completely.
