New Delhi, 09th July 2023: During the ongoing International Year of Millets, the Indian Education Ministry has recommended that all schools across the country serve millet-based dishes in their canteens and plan a calendar of activities to raise awareness of the healthy coarse grains.

The ministry wrote to all states and union territories in April, asking them to submit a month-by-month calendar of activities to raise awareness about millets, according to a July 5 statement. “However, the information is still pending,” according to the ministry.

On India’s proposal, the United Nations proclaimed 2023 the International Year of Millets, and the government has since gone on a campaign to popularise the coarse grains that are both rich in micronutrients and hardy.

The ministry also directed the states to adhere to a millet-based recipe book developed by India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority.

Last year, the ministry had requested that all states include millet in the free midday meal menus offered to pupils in government and government-aided schools through class eight. It also prioritised raising awareness about millet’s use among students and parents and their contribution to food security and nutrition.
