How come Padma Shri Dr. K.K Agarwal succumbed to Covid despite being fully vaccinated?

Despite being fully vaccinated against Covid, the renowned cardiologist and former president of the Indian Medical Association Padma Shri Dr KK Aggarwal, caught the infection on 28th of April and finally after fighting a lengthy battle against the infection, he succumbed to the deadly disease on late Monday night.

The demise of Dr. Agarwal has once again raised some eyebrows on how effective the vaccine actually is in safeguarding people against Covid.

Addressing this growing suspicion against efficiency of the vaccine while speaking to Live Hindustan, Dr. Arvind Kumar of Medanta Hospital said that during the phase 3 trials of the vaccine, about 25-30% of the volunteers caught the infection, but it was noticed that none of them required hospital bed, ventilator and everyone of them managed to recover from the disease.

Dr. Kumar further said that it was believed prior to the second wave that the person who gets fully vaccinated against Covid will have no chance of succumbing to the infection. But during the second wave, many people have succumbed to the disease despite being fully vaccinated.

When asked about what could have possibly gone wrong in the case of Dr. Agarwal, Dr. Kumar said that there could have been three reasons for the demise of Dr. Agarwal despite him being fully vaccinated. Firstly, Dr. Agarwal might have failed to develop antibodies, secondly he might have failed in developing antibodies in sufficient quantities, and thirdly, even if the antibodies were developed, the new strain of virus might have managed to bypass the antibodies.

Dr. Kumar further assured people that despite the vaccine not being 100% effective, it is the best way to avoid hospitalization, ventilator and the possibility of death when the infection catches you.
