Delhi, Sept 10th,2022: The Union government has banned the export of broken rice and imposed a 20% duty on the export of non-Basmati rice. The step has been taken domestic demand rises, prices of rice increases and production falls by 11% in the country.

The government has said that rice production is likely to fall by 60-70 lakh tonnes during the Kharif season this year due to a fall in the paddy sowing area.
The Kharif season, usually spanning between June to October, accounts for almost 80% of India’s total rice production.

The area under the paddy crop has been down by 5.62 percent at 383.99 lakh hectares in the ongoing Kharif season so far due to poor rains in some states, as per the latest data released by the agriculture ministry.

Multiple rounds of heat waves in several wheat-growing regions in India ahead of the rabi harvest affected some wheat crops.

The ban aims to increase domestic inflow and availability of broken rice for poultry feed and ethanol production.
India exported non-Basmati rice to more than 150 countries last year alone.

India’s rice exports touched a record 21.5 million tonnes in 2021, more than the combined shipments of the world’s next four biggest exporters of grain: Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, and the United States.

The ban will not apply to the supply of consignments that are already being loaded, the shipping bill has been filed or the commodity has been handed over to the customs and is registered in the system.
