India Expo Mart Chairman Rakesh Kumar shares mantra for success in export business with BIMTECH students

Greater Noida, 21st June: Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) conducted its Orientation Programme for Post Graduate Diploma in Management (International Business) for the Batch of 2022 – 24, session 2022 – 23, on Monday.

At the event, BIMTECH Director Dr. H Chaturvedi gave an inspiring welcome address to the students. In his speech, he extended warm welcome to Claudio Ansoreno Montero, the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Costa Rica in India, who was invited as the Chief Guest. He also welcomed and introduced the Guest of Honor – Rakesh Kumar, the Director-General of Export Promotion Council of Handicrafts (EPCH), and the Chairman of India Exposition Mart Limited, who was invited as the Guest of Honour. He introduced Kumar as India’s leading export personality, who has been helping India’s firms to expand their markets worldwide.

 

Dr. Chaturvedi called Mr. Kumar a luminaire who has adopted a very innovative entrepreneurial model without any aid from the government.

Dr. Chaturvedi also welcomed Mr. Neeraj Narang, director of HCM Strategy, Oracle as an eminent guest at the event.

At the event, Claudio Ansoreno Montero, the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Costa Rica in India, was invited as the chief guest. He talked to the students on the topic of how international trade and relations have been impacted by global factors such as the Covid 19 Pandemic, the monetary and fiscal policies, the supply chain constraints, and the war in Ukraine. 

 

Montero explained how the Covid-19 pandemic affected the import and export across continents and has affected various sectors to different degrees, especially in the areas of hospitality, travel, and services. “The lockdown affected the economy by decreasing demands, shutting down businesses, and increasing unemployment.”

 

He stated that luckily several vaccines were discovered by 2021, which allowed the economic growth to start recovering by mid-2021 and is continuing to recover in 2022. He explained how countries are recovering from this recession by giving the example of the United States. He went on to talk about the supply chain disruption amid slowdown in the second-largest economy of the world, China, affects trade all over the world. He described how the war in Ukraine has affected the food supply across the globe, and how it will force millions of people into poverty. “Several factors have been and are continuing to affect the crisis of food supply and food shortage across the globe.”

He also talked about how India’s political position as a neutral observer has positioned its economy to grow by more than 8% this year and explained the factors contributing to this growth.

Finally, he told the students that trade moves the world, but it is not something that can be studied in isolation from the geopolitical conflicts of international circumstances, it will always happen unexpectedly. He stated that all the above-mentioned issues are related to the framework of economic analysis. He encouraged the students to study macroeconomics and political economy which will enable the students to make better decisions. 

The students were also addressed by Rakesh Kumar, the Director-General of Export Promotion Council of Handicrafts (EPCH), and the Chairman of India Exposition Mart Limited, who was invited as the Guest of Honour. He gave the students a motivating oration by sharing his personal experience in the field of Merchandising Exports. 

Mr. Kumar narrated to the students how the announcement of lockdown at the onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic proved to be the biggest challenge for the production in merchandise export field. He shared that despite the challenging situation, the highest growth in the handicrafts sector has been in the year 2021 – 22. He explained the challenges faced by the exporters and how they overcame them. The pandemic pushed EPCH to adopt a visual vision which propelled them to conduct successful Virtual Trade Fairs for the past two years since June 202o.

 

Kumar gave the students vital lessons that would benefit them in their professions. By sharing his experience of the virtual trade fair in July 2020, he encouraged the students to grab opportunities. He talked to them about the three important questions of the merchandise export business – export what, export where, and export how.  He gave the students an important lesson to carry with them through their career in the merchandise export business –  to always have the answer to the question ‘What’s new?’. Lastly, Mr. Kumar urged the students to always bring uniqueness and newness to their business as it will help them gain a better prospectus and will help them face new challenges.
