Jaitley’s ‘growth to curb poverty’ a breakaway move
The Modi government’s unapologetic prescription of high growth as the antidote to poverty marks a break from the UPA’s hesitant embrace of reforms during the latter half of its second term in office.
Though former PM Manmohan Singh often — just as finance minister Arun Jaitley did in Lok Sabha on Friday — spoke of how healthy growth rates fund anti-poverty programmes, he did not get the leeway till it was too late.
