Greater Noida (April 4, 2025): Kapil Dev, the legendary former cricketer and current Chairman of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), expressed his gratitude and excitement during the prize distribution ceremony of the ongoing Adani Invitational Golf Championship 2025 at the Jaypee Greens Golf & Spa Resort in Greater Noida.
Speaking on behalf of the players, Kapil Dev known for his iconic leadership in Indian cricket, shared heartfelt thanks for the significant support provided by the Adani Group to the sport of golf in India. I like to stand here and speak on behalf of the players. All the people here, as a sportsperson, I would like to say thank you very much. You don’t have to come for the golf; I think we, as golfers, are happy to see you here, he began, expressing his pride at the group’s involvement in the event.
The Adani Invitational, which began on April 1, features a ₹1.5 crore prize purse and marks the return of the PGTI to Jaypee Greens after 11 years. With 126 players, including 124 professionals and 2 amateurs, competing in the stroke-play format, the event will conclude on April 4, followed by a Pro-Am event on April 5.
Kapil Dev lauded the Adani Group’s commitment to golf, emphasizing the importance of their support for the future of the sport in India. Pranav Adani and the Adani Group coming into golf means that our lives as players are in safe hands. That’s what we want to say. As players, we want to make one request: just promise us that every upcoming year, you will bring in bigger tournaments, he said.
Dev highlighted the importance of consistent growth in the golfing scene, stressing that while golf and cricket are different sports, the hard work of golfers is no less than that of cricketers. It will not make any difference to you, but it will make a huge difference in our players’ lives, he added, urging the Adani Group to continue its support for golf in India and promise even larger tournaments in the future.
The PGTI Chairman further praised the group for giving golf a “real kick” and expressed confidence that in 3-5 years, people would be clamoring to play in this tournament. We cannot compare this golf game with cricket, but the hard work of golfers is no less than that of cricketers, he stated. In the next 3-5 years, people will say, ‘I want to play in this tournament,’ and that’s what we aim for.
Kapil Dev also took the opportunity to encourage the media to cover a wide range of sports in the country, beyond cricket, to help raise awareness and recognition for athletes in other disciplines. There is not only one game in this country; many games are played here. Please focus on them and make people aware of them, to the nation and to society, he said.
Finally, Dev extended his thanks to Jaypee Greens and all its members for their unwavering support. I also want to thank the cardie present here at Jaypee; their work may not be recognized, but they have been working unconditionally, and their efforts are incomparable, he remarked. He concluded by stating that, on behalf of Pranav Adani, the next edition of the Adani Invitational will be an even grander affair.
This year’s Adani Invitational Golf Championship not only signifies the growing influence of the Adani Group in promoting Indian sports but also showcases their dedication to the development of golf in the country, with further plans for grassroots talent support through the launch of the Adani-PGTI Golf Training Academy in Ahmedabad.
