London, Sept 5: Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak was beaten in the Conservative leadership election by British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who will become the country’s next Prime Minister.
Liz Truss, 47, will be the third female prime minister of the United Kingdom. Sunak was defeated by all Conservative members in a postal ballot.
Boris Johnson was forced to quit as Conservative Party leader on July 7 after a succession of resignations from cabinet members in protest of his scandal-plagued leadership.
Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss rose through the Conservative ranks to become finalists for the role of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak have detailed their long-term plans for Britain through almost a dozen hustings and a six-week head-to-head competition. Both competitors competed in 12 countrywide tournaments, with the first taking place in Leeds, Northern England.
